Remote Desktop Connections

A rather catastrophic disk crash has left me setting up a new Cortex instance. Catastrophic in that I had a backup of the Cortex database and not much else. Yup, forgot to get the round toit to get more NAS space for backup of history files etc. Also a bit annoying 'cos I did finally get round to creating a script to automatically move log files into Year/Month directories to stop the main log directory ending up with so many files that things get slow.

As a side effect, the event has forced me onto Windows 7 and a USB PCU, as the most available solution was to install Cortex on a pre-existing Win 7 VM running on a Mac Mini. I mention that specifically for Chris Hunter :)*

Since I've lost all my twiddles, I've had to remember and then go looking for solutions to the typical RDP issues of speech synthesis not working after disconnecting. I've found that the tscon.exe solution is still the chosen method, but the exact configuration seems to vary. There are methods based on a batch file (which was what I used on XP), a shortcut with equivalent command, and what seems to be a neat solution using the task scheduler to spot a session disconnect and run the tscon command in response.

Given the narrow window I have for HA experimentation, I'd be interested in responses with any alternatives/further details in order to update the FAQ. The session identifier seems to be rather key to it all.

As an aside, I also discovered a neat solution to the long standing RDP/mouse tracking/accuracy issue. There is a registry entry which allows you to increase the rate at which mouse event are sent to the client documented here: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;196460.

* Yes, OSX screen sharing offers an alternative to RDP when going Mac to Mac, but the graphic responsiveness of RDP is still better. Screen Sharing is like VNC.

AUI Door Entry Behaviour

I've ordered an AUI to experiment with before fitting alongside drive gates but was curious ahead of time to see how the button press behaviour can be customised.

I intend to install the AUI and an additional relay module so that I can control both a pedestrian gate and vehicle gate from the same location. When the intercom button is pressed I understand that you can click ok on a DFP to initiate an intercom session and then ok again to accept the visitor. What I'm wondering is if this can be customised so that for accept visitor a short press releases the pedestrian gate and a long press triggers the vehicle gate?

Intercom camera to TV

Has anybody connected an AUI camera up to display on a TV inside the house when the visitor button is pressed?

I intend to fit a capture card to the Cortex PC but was curious to know what others are doing to relay the video elsewhere. I have a couple of spare cat 5 outlets by the TV in the living room and there is a DFP with line of sight for IR. What about multiple TVs/multiple cameras?

Door connections and stairs

I have a door at the top of the stairs between my entrance hall and landing. What is the correct way to define connections? I currently have it set as opens out from entrance hall (downstairs) and opens into landing (upstairs). Should I still add a stairs object and if so with what as the connections?

which wireless window contact/sensors for DIY Home Automation system?

Hi,
my first post here, so I hope this is the correct section...

A friend and I are developing our own HA system. My friend had a new house built and so he was able to have contacts integrated into his doors and windows and wires run to a central place. I've then built a device that reads those contacts and reports the state of each door and window to the HA system.

I, however, live in an old house where I can't just run wires to each door and window. So I'm looking for a wireless / RF solution for the same thing. I found a lot of these sensors but they are all for some sort of commercial stand-alone alarm system.

Does anyone know such a system that can be connected to a computer somehow that would allow me to read the state of each contact individually (not only "all closed")?

Thanks,
Chris

Event Scheduler, DFP menu to disable/enable an event?

Hi All,

Planning to have the scheduler open some black out blinds for a room, everyday at sunrise.

However want the ability to DFP Menu it, such that if someone is staying over in the room, to disable the event (and then at some point in future to re-enable it).

Is this possible?

New installation issues

Thanks to the support on this forum, and of course from Karam, I now have my Idratek system up and running!

I'm using a Samsung NC10 running Windows 7, and powered up the network today.
I have a PLH-001 in the kitchen, which also links to a door contact on the kitchen door. A THS-001 monitors temperature and humidity in the utility room (that will one day operate the extractor fan!). I have enough cable around the house now to add further modules, mostly for lighting and heating, and then also things like the doorbell.

I encountered four problems today. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd be grateful.

I do have an old DFP (bought 2nd hand), which I plugged into the network. I have the sound set up. I can send a 'bong' when the kitchen door opens, but it won't read any speech. I have speech enabled in the same properties window. I installed 'Mary' and turned up the speech volume in the speech engine window. I just can't get any speech.

My second problem concerns a (2nd hand) DRB-002. I connected it up to my kitchen lights (2 circuits, both LED). I configured it so that each button controlled one circuit, toggled on/off. It worked a couple of times, then one of the circuits stayed on, whether or not the module was on or off. I tried resetting the unit, controlling it from Cortex, rebooting, cutting the power, etc. but I just couldn't turn it off. Does it sound like it's broken?!

Thirdly, this same DRB-002 has the same ID as the PLH-001. When I 'read' the node in Cortex, it lists all the features of both units together. I guess it was already commissioned with the same ID, and the order in which I installed the units created the problem. I tried changing the ID, and following instructions in other threads, but when I plug it back in, the issue is still there.

As both of these issues relate to the same unit, the answer might be to scrap that one?

Finally, when I try and access Cortex via a web browser (either locally or on another machine, including iPad), after logging in, I get the error 'XSL XML HTM Transform error'. Any ideas? A search doesn't throw any light on this.

Many thanks in advance. I'm looking forward to expanding my Idratek - I've got so many ideas!

What makes an outdoor PIR and outdoor PIR?

Hi All,

I've been using an Idratek PLT module under the porch, for temperature, and PIR to turn on the light when needed.

However I've just noticed that the motion sense has been going nuts to the rate of say 550 detected events in an hour, during the day.

I think it must be heated related (having now moved all the plants which could move out of the way and bar graph of events)?

Assuming this is correct, is this a case of one should be using an "outdoor PIR" instead / what makes an outdoor PIR and outdoor PIR?

Insight appreciated,

Marcus

CBUS connection problem

Hi every one,

I am hoping that someone can help with a communication issue.

I have set up a serial to Ethernet convertor on my home network, connected to my 5100T telephone interface and struggled to connect. I then used a usb to serial directly from my laptop everything connected was able to program units. Next step I tried the Ethernet/serial device again and i was straight in.

Here is where the trouble started ever since going back to using it no connection over the Ethernet but no problem locally. So I thought I would use the CBUS diagnostic utility with the Ethernet connection and everything works fine can connect and send all on all off commands. So I am at a loss as to why i can not connect the toolkit over the serial /Ethernet maybe some one has had the same problem and can help.

The new controller Xcomfort for smartphones and tablets

Smart Control Unit Manager is the heart of any smart wiring. It is installed at the request RF control system of smart phones and also allows for convenient control of the house. Connects to the Internet via WiFi or LAN modem-router for communication uses TCP / IP protocol. Inclusion in the network is very easy, because uses DHCP IP address. Eaton ensure server authentication - Access password and user name.

Smart communications manager within the Internet mediates remote connections households with a smart phone. Provided in addition to controlling lights and appliances - especially zone control heating and cooling energy consumption evaluation, logic control households with time and other user-friendly features, like contained in the Room Manager. It features SMS and e-mail communication software allows the integration of IP cameras, offering the user parameterization scenes, times, temperatures, etc.

Control is possible in the home and outside the home. If you are in a home WiFi router, the Smart Manager to connect directly from your smartphone or tablet. In this case, the smart phone will replace the current RF remote control. For remote control out of the house, it is necessary to connect to the Internet.

Smart Manager communicates wirelessly with up to 99 RF components within easy reach, or even through routing. If the installation is extensive, it is recommended to always use the ECI-LAN interface connecting to Ethernet. In this case, each ECI-LAN communication expands Smart Manager another 99 RF devices.

Customer management applications including home heating / cooling runs in RF Smart Manager. Installation companies will appreciate the possibility to remotely configure applications through a web browser. If you lose your Internet connection, object management is not particularly at risk. You can not only remote control - heating controls and other procedures is fully functional.

Foreign characters and internationalization

Hi,

I don't know if this is relevant for many users, but I have two internationalization issues with Idra:

1. My object names are in Polish with several characters specific to our language. Polish characters appear perfectly in Cortex, but when the names are displayed through the Web Server, they appear in a wrong character set (UTF-8 instead of ISO-8859-2). Manually changing the encoding in the browser fixes the issue temporarily, but it doesn't work on a mobile and this selection is forgotten as soon as the page is reloaded. Is there a simple way to add a '<meta charset="ISO-8859-2">' to all page layouts?

2. While using Alarm Pro with DFP to arm/disarm the alarm, the pannel usually repeats the same messages in Polish and in English. I had this issue since the beginning and can't get rid of it.

I will be gratefull for Your feedback...

Hi I'm New

Hi everyone,

I'd like to introduce myself, as I'm new to these forums and new to home automation. My name is Owen and I'm a software developer with a 3 bedroom 1930's house in south west London. I am planning to fully automate my house over the next 6-12 months as well as adding a 4th bedroom in the loft and extending the lounge to the rear. This will involve a complete rewiring and replumbing of the house, new doors, new kitchen, new bathrooms, partial underfloor heating, rain water harvesting and a sedum roof.

Currently I'm looking at using Loxone. From what I can tell, it seems to provide all the facilities of the more expensive systems, but at a fraction of the price. However, I'm open to other suggestions if you think they might help. I don't need to have control over absolutely everything to the Nth degree, but I do want things to be really really reliable and operable through smart phone/internet. The main things I want to automate are:
- lighting with dimmers
- door locks and alarm
- heating
- music system
- power sockets

I'll be doing the design and bits of the labour myself. My budget for home automation is 4-5k, excluding labour. Is that a ridiculous figure? am I going to need way more than that? I have a zillion other specific questions, but for now I'm just looking for some general pointers.

Cheers,
Owen

Door Locks

Ok, so this is my first real question. It's more of a hardware issue than a technical one.
The question is what lock do you use for you front door? And does it meet any of the criteria below?

I'd like my front door to open automatically. I don't mind if it's through my phone, an RFID tag, fingerprint or whatever, as long as it has the following features:
- is very secure, so ideally a deadbolt of some sort.
- can be opened manually by a normal key or other manual means - in case the system fails.
- does not have a significant large visible panel on the front of the door or beside the door. It has to look like a normal unautomated door from the outside.
- does not have a door handle on the front. There will be something to grip onto to pull the door closed, but no turning handle.
- must be slam shut. i.e. it will automatically lock when you close it.
- can be opened manually from the inside with out a key. This is important in case of fire.

The closest thing I saw was the August lock(still not available yet). However, this potentially has two flaws I can see:
1. it requires you to have a handle
2. what happens once you are inside? does it stay unlocked? I'd like it to be locked until I manually open it.

Any suggestions anyone? I would be very interested to hear what other people use.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you might have!

Owen

Starting my CBUS install

Hi every one,

After a long awaited start my fist piece of lighting cable was pulled into the new house yesterday!!!!:D

The house is a long way off finished waiting for the concrete first floor at the moment!!

Its an Eco design so some really good features that will hopefully get our energy bills to zero

Here is a picture of the house I installed the first piece of pink CAT5 cable for the CBUS link to the shed at the bottom of the garden where i will be installing a 8 way marshaling box 5108RMBP to control outside lighting.
Unfortunately you can not quite see the cable but node zero is on the left of the picture just inside to where the rain water harvest tank is located.

Up for chatting about any of the features/installation anyone is interested about

Isn't this the Internet of Things?

Having spent the last few months dabbling with HA, it dawned on me that this is essentially the "Internet of Things" that's supposedly only just coming into existence.
I've written a much longer blog post about it at http://ukstartups.com/internet-of-things/
Would appreciate your thoughts.

Is Home Automation and IoT the same thing or is there a difference that I'm missing?
