Breakiing news: UK Amazon Echo works with Evohome!

$

Wow - I've just set up Amazon Echo; logged into the Echo Honeywell account; I asked it to discover devices; it discovered all 12 zones; I asked Alexa to set the temperature in the Living Room to 23 degrees. ALEXA DID IT!

It only too 5 to 10 minutes with no hiccoughs.

What more can I say? Clever Amazon and clever Honeywell!

And here is the proof: https://youtu.be/Opjo5DuqOVo

I wonder what other Evohome commands it will accept?

Time for a glass of red wine in my 23 degree living room to celebrate I think.

My Evohome control just went completely dead

Today I had a strange experience. My Evohome home controller was sitting on the wall stand completely blank. I took it off the wall stand, took out the batteries and put in new batteries. The panel came back to life. So I thought the wall mount's power supply was dead. But when I measured the voltage, I did get some! Put the panel back on the wall mount with the new batteries and everything seemed fine.

So what could have caused the panel from going dead?

There is absolutely no faults logged for a week in the fault log.

Do I need to make sure the replacement batteries are of a certain chemistry and rating? I've put in some Eneloop Pro, would the panel be OK with those?

Guest bedroom zones

I have today fitted an HR92 in a guest bedroom & its en-suite bathroom - 2 zones.

I am at a loss how to schedule the heating in both rooms. Some months these
rooms won't be used at all, but most months I have visitors for maybe 6 -10
nights a month, not consecutive probably 2 - 4 guests staying for a night or two.

Most of the time I will want both rooms at, say 8 degrees, but when I have guests they need a normal schedule.

How do you address these issues please?

Heating Wiring

Hi

I'm looking at the possibility of self installing Evohome for two reasons first spoken to a few local installers and they've made it quite clear they really don't know or don't want to do it! 2nd I figure if I go through the installation I'll have a much better understanding if anything goes wrong.

My first step has been to trace the current wiring, it's not complete there is an UFH element that I've not done yet, but I've hit my first issue as it's a lot different to what I was expecting (a fairly standard S-plan).

Can anyone advise if what I've found looks reasonable, or have I gone very wrong somewhere with my tracing

Thanks

What dimmers to use for LED bulbs?

$

Good Evening everyone,

I am new to HA and just getting started. I have started with a Raspberry Pi running Home Assistant and a Aeontec Z-Stick. I will probably move up to something a bit different once I have got to grips with it all like Vera Plus or Samsung SmartThings but I figured this would get me started.

The first thing I would like to get is a light switch for my lounge. Currently my lounge has two light fixtures and each one has 3 bulbs and those bulbs are 4Watt LEDs (none dimmable).

The current light switch is a two switch on/off and the lights are 2 wire (so there are 4 wires in total, 2 for each fixture).

What I would like to do is get rid of the light switch and put in a zwave switch that can be controlled either via a physical switch or via z-wave. Ideally I would like to keep them separate loads so we can switch one end of the room on/off differently from the other end however I wouldn't mind joining them to one load if that was needed. I would however like a switch that can be dimmed despite not having dimmable bulbs because I can replace them with dimmable LED's at a later date. The dimming feature only needs to be controlled via zwave however the physical switch can just be simple on/off for what I care. I would also like this new zwave switch to fit as a replacement for my current switch not requiring me to do any modification to the wall etc its a standard UK light switch fitting.

Please can someone help point me to the right product I need I am very very very confused and have been researching for weeks and really don't want to buy the wrong kit.

Thanks in advance!

Regards,
Max

Honeywell, are you here?

If anyone from Honeywell are reading this then if you were to bring out a replacement Evohome controller that was exactly the same as it is now but that was Apple Home Kit compatible, I'd buy it in an instant even though I've got one already, that's how much we want this.

Get on it!

First smart heating system - need some advice

Hi All,

My first post here, so I apologise in advance for any silly questions. My house is as follows:

Ground floor

Boiler is downstairs, with programmer and one thermostat.
Living Room (2
Kitchen
Dining Room
Hall
Utility
Toilet

First Floor

Second thermostat in master bedroom that controls first and second floor.
Master bedroom and ensuite
Sons bedroom
Spare room
Office
Landing
Bathroom

Second Floor
Playroom
Home cinema

I would like to control both current heating zones, but also add additional controls, for example, the spare room, playroom and home cinema would be off for most of the time, unless we wanted it, in which case, I could go on my phone and dial in a temporary temperature for the room. I would also like to be able to control the kitchen separately as it gets very hot when cooking, so no need to have heating on at those times. I know that some systems can have individual TRVs. One of my questions is do with this individual room control, and may highlight my ignorance. Say most of the upstairs rooms are to temperature and the heating therefore off. If I then decide I need the spare room, how does the heating system send heat to that one room, without overheating the other rooms that are already at the desired temperature?

I like the idea of the Tado system as it has the geofencing that I like and the individual TRVs without being over the top expensive. My plan is to buy the starter kit and the additional thermostat to start with, then add TRVs as and when. I presume this is possible.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

IFTTT - Evohome setpoint override cancel?

$

Hi All,
I have setup a quick bodge using a SmartThings virtual on/off switch to trigger a handful of IFTTT recipes, which turn off 4 zones on my Evohome if we go bed before the scheduled 'off' (read, 10c set points).

This works, however I wanted SmartThings to then switch off the virtual switch via a schedule, which in turn would then remove the override on the zones and hand back control to the schedule. It seems as though being able to do this is missing! Only options I have are to set a permanent temperature setting, or set the over ride for a number of hours.

I have got around this by setting the override for 5 hours which is flexible enough to not be a problem, but if I accidently hit this virtual switch I would then have to go through each zone removing the over ride so not 100% ideal.

Is this the way its going to have to be, or is there some hidden gem that I am missing?

I realise that there is a home brew ST integration app, but it didn't seem to work all that great so still holding out (wishful thinking!) for the official integration, but until then I would like to make my life a little easier!

Ta!

Evohome - Things you can only do via the App

Let's make a list of things you cannot do via the Control panel but can via the App.

1. Switch between Quick Actions without having to turn off the previous one.
2. Extend the time of a Quick Action without having to redo the entire Quick Action.

LightwaveRF and Arduino help required..

Evening all, first post so please go easy :-)

So.. in short I'm struggling working out how to send a 'dim' commend to my lightwave 2 gang dimmer.

What I'm using..

An Echo linked to the HU Bridge on a Raspberry.. calls openhab on the same raspberry which then sends a url request to a NodeMCU running a webserver which inturn sends rf 433 out to control the switch.

What I can't work out is the correct command to tell it to set to 30% ..

bit of code so far..

byte on1[] = {0xf6,0xf6,0xf6,0xee,0x6f,0xeb,0xbe,0xed,0xb7,0x7b };
byte off1[] = {0xf6,0xf6,0xf6,0xf6,0x6f,0xeb,0xbe,0xed,0xb7,0x7b };
byte dim1[] = {0xf6,0x90,0xf6,0xee,0x6f,0xeb,0xbe,0xed,0xb7,0x7b };

Now the first two nibbles seem to be the data and it's this that I think I need to change but whatever I try doesn't seem to work. The on / off works great.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Steve

Switching Off a ZONE?

Hi all

Today I installed 4 HR92UK to my system. Prior to this I only had the Evohome controller and the wireless receiver on the boiler.

So, I created 2 zones:

Shop
Bedroom

Each zone has 2 HR92UK radiator control valves.

Is it possible to switch one zone off or is this achieved by reducing the temperature?

Many thanks

John

Clear existing binding from CS92 (hot water sensor)

With most of the other wireless devices there's instructions about how to clear any existing bindings (usually involving a 15 second button press), but I can find no such information for the CS92 hot water sensor.

Does this mean it isn't possible to clear the existing binding and do a full reset?

Thanks,

P.

Evohome Single Zone Not Working

$

Hi everyone. So winter is coming around again, and so starts all the issues with the heating !! :o(

Got an odd one here. I have a single zone that doesn't seem to be firing up the boiler. My set up is 8 zones in the house (1 for each rad). With all the other 7, if I request a higher room temperature than it currently is in that room, the valve opens, the boiler fires up and it all works.

However, with the Conservatory, the HR92 responds, opens the valve on the radiator but the boiler never fires up and so the rad never gets hot. It used to work, but I noticed it stopped at the end of last year but would hope it would go away before the winter this year. lol

I've deleted the Zone from the controller, reset the HR92, set the zone up again and rebound the HR92 but exactly the same thing ??!!!

Does anyone have any ideas. Am I correct that it's the controller that's bound to the BDR91 Relay as setting up the HR92 and binding it, it doesn't ask about the Relay. Just makes it more odd, that if the other zones are working, I know the controller is talking to BDR92 ok, so what is going on with this radiator ??

Any help would very much be appreciated, as I really do not want to have to reset the entire system and start from scratch. I had enough issues with it when I first set it up and don't want to go through that again !!

Measuring real time gas consumption

For the last eight years I've been reading my gas meter every day which entails a trip outside come sun, rain or snow. All this was about trying to save gas and I ended up installing a wireless-based Honeywell Evohome system when it was first introduced.

However, I made a nice discovery last week with some technology based on Z-wave wireless. This is a system made by the Danish company NorthQ (https://store.northq.com/collections/kits). This consists of a magnetic sensor that sticks to the gas meter, a small transmitter unit and a receiver/hub that connects to the home network. This sends gas meter readings to NorthQ's system where I can see a real-time graph of gas usage. It also allows you to export to Excel.

Sometimes, just sometimes, technology can be magic and works first time!

You can see the results from today here: http://www.gare.co.uk/images/q5.jpg

The first peak is hot water, and the second heating the house in the morning.

Cortex voice control using Amazon Echo

Having purchased an Amazon Echo now they are available in the UK, I was curious as to how difficult it would be to connect it to my existing Cortex system now we have a Web API available.

After about four hours of reading/coding, here's an early working demo:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vL19rt1YZ8

Still very much a work in progress, and only supports the basic on/off commands so far, but it at least demonstrates it's possible to use Echo to decode the instruction (via the Amazon cloud), send it to my code in AWS Lambda which decodes the request and calls the Cortex web API back in my home network via my broadband connection. Note my Cortex installation is particularly slow in responding generally (even to module button presses) so don't take this demo as indicative of general performance.

Cheers

Hi everyone
I have tried looking around and cant find 100% acurate instructions on what i need to do what needs bridging what doesnt etc

i have only just bought all the kit so havent tried anything yet

but what i gather is
  1. install vr33
  2. connect x32 to x31
  3. connect cable that was connected to x31 to the other connector on the vr33
  4. disconnect 230v control
  5. bridge the + and - for 230 and 24V control
  6. wire the r8810 to the T0 terminals on the vr33

do i need to do anything else how can i tell if its all working?

many thanks for any help you can give!

Evohome Controller Base and Wall Mount issues

$

I find the Evohome Controller can be easily be separated from the base unit, for example just lifting up the unit often leaves behind the base.

So, I purchased the wall mounting unit (with transformer that fits inside a 40mm pattrese box) and the same thing happens to it on there, even the slightest touch has it off the wall, so I'm wondering if anyone brushes past it, the first thing that will happen is the display will be off and fall to the ground and because we have a wooden floor the display might end up being damaged on impact.

I'm going to apply some Blutack to the slot to help reduce the possibility of it falling off - unlike the rest of the system, not such a good design IMO

I'm about to buy a house which is seriously "wired" and I need to know the best way to use it.
The property has
Cat5 in every room taken to a central location
Speaker sockets in various locations downstairs also wired to a convenient location. Also some ceiling speakers.
Tv satelite sockets in various locations taken to a distribution amp in the roof space which also has the feed from a dish
Super fast broadband
Centralised vacuum system (less relevant but it sets the scene)

I also have a pair of humax satelite systems and a couple of smart TVs

So.... Ideas on what to do please ! Not sure what I want...but I want ideas
