Merry Christmas

(or whatever you celebrate, if anything, at this time of the year).

Hope you all manage to eat and drink too much over the coming days.

Evohome sounds my perfect solution?

Hello all and merry Christmas :D

First post here and after a bit of advice on Honeywell Evohome setup.
I was initially looking at the hive and nest, I even ordered a nest but shall most likely be returning it as after looking over the honeywell evohome it just seems the best system for my needs..

Current system:
Combi boiler, 1 zone in entire house (ground floor living areas and first floor 3 bedrooms and bathroom)
Danfoss 7 day CH clock next to boiler and the worlds ugliest danfoss basic roomstat in my Hall, That's it just program on / off times or leave running and set by hall stat and danfoss rad trv's.

There is one room that I need to be warm pretty much all the time through the night and parts of the day and that's my daughters bedroom, She is disabled and her bedroom is also a sensory room, she sleeps on a thin mattress on the floor as a raised bed is too dangerous for her.

We will also be converting the garage into a downstairs bedroom/wetroom for her in the future as she's getting much to big to carry up/down stairs etc now, especially for my wife, so that will need control also.

I was thinking about getting plumbers and sparks in to zone the system, ground floor 1 zone, first floor 2 zone and a third for future garage/bedroom then add nests to each zone... but this from what I can make out would cost me a fair bit more than a honeywell evohome setup and at the end of it I would still be left with less control than a evohome.

Do you still have to have a radiator (currently in my hall where roomstat is) running freely with no trv?

My upstairs bathroom actually has 2 rads in it, normal one with trv and a towel radiator running freely like the downstairs hall one, would this be an issue to fit a evohome trv in there?

My kitchen has 2 rads and my living rm has 2 rads, can I link the 2 living rm evohome rad trv to a single honeywell stat on the wall in that room and control/sense temp from there and that changes both rads? Basically multiple rads in one controlled zone.

One last note... everything about evohome seems perfect but I just read the 13 page evohome is noisy thread and now I'm a little concerned about noise as daughters head would be about 1/2 foot fro the trv and she sleeps basically on the floor :(

Thanks for taking the time to read.

HR92's and BRD91 Guidance Please

Hi all,

Just jumped into the evohome! Ive just moved into a new build which has a 2 zone splan + system.

I have installed 2 BRD91's that controll the 2 zone vales (for upstairs and downstairs) a Boiler relay and a Hot water Kit. Evohome controller controlling downstairs and a Y87RF controlling upstairs.

Now my question......

Can i mix HR92's with the Upstairs BRD91. I have 4 HR92's but 6 rads. So i wanted the Upstairs thermostat to control the 2 rads that do not have HR92's.

So can i program the evohome controller to open the BRD91 when the different HR92's call for heat?

EG

Bedroom 1 calls for heat > opens Upstairs BRD91 (Boiler fires from Boiler relay) > Bedroom 1 reaches setpoint > BRD91 closes (Boiler stops firing)
Bedroom 2 Calls for heat > opens the same upstairs BRD91(Boiler fires from Boiler relay) > Bedroom 2 reaches setpoint > BRD91 closes (Boiler stops firing)

So how many zones can a single BDR91 be binded to?

The theory is there but will the evohome work this way?

Hope my explanation is clear

Thanks

Phantom changes

Wonder if anybody has experienced the following.

I was away Christmas Day, returning Boxing Day. I set my custom menu which had all zones bar one at 14c. The one exception is my conservatory which I left set to 5c. I checked the app later and all was ok. Yesterday before setting off home I checked the app and surprised to see one zone was apparently set to 35c but the temperature was 22c (the custom setting I had fixed was 14c). Something caused a change and there was nobody at home. I cancelled the custom setting on the way home and checked that the zone was properly set to its normal temperature. When I got home the radiator was warmer than it ought to be, it was 21C yet set to 17.5. I removed the HR92 took the batteries out then put it back. Seemed oK rest of the evening.

This morning the zone was warmer than it should be yet the readings and settings on the HR92 were as they should be. I removed the batteries from the Panel and then reinstalled. As I write this all is now as it should be. But something had gone wrong. Any thoughts anybody? As said, nobody at home and in the app the settings were right.

It seems to me I have an HR92 going on the blink. Two years old, installed December 2014.

This has given rise to three thoughts:

1. What is the life expectancy of an HR92? Surely more than 2 years?

2. What to do if an HR92 fails. Yes I can put a normal TRV control back on but the radiator is useless unless another radiator is activated to get the boiler fired up. Of course I could swap HR92s around where there is a room I don't need heating. Another solution which has made me go to the Evohome Shop is have a spare HR92 just in case! Order placed this morning!!

3. It would be much better if in the app the custom menus can be adjusted. Far better to be able to change the temperature settings in them in the app and also control how long the quick action is to run. Being able to configure it for a specific time as opposed to days would be much better.

Boiler relay still firing with no heat demand.

About 15 minutes ago I switched the system to Economy mode. As a result all rooms are well above the proportional band, and thus no heat demand. Also, the hot water tank is within the temp band.

But the boiler just fired. So I looked in Domoticz to find the zone demanding heat, and there isn't one.

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

First ever genuine proof I've seen of what others have complained about. Still a demand percentage on the boiler BDR91 some time after zones have stopped calling for heat. This is live data from an HGI80.

I wonder whether the controller operates some kind of 'moving average' smoothing algorithm?

Evohome - at what time does Away mode end?

Hi folks,

If my Away mode says "AWAY ACTIVE UNTIL 31 DEC", does that mean that it ends on Midnight of the night before 31 Dec, or does it end at midnight at the *end* of 31 Dec? Put another way: if I return to my house on 31 Dec at 2pm, will the house be warm, or freezing?

Thanks!

Less Robotic Annunciations

I am having relatives staying in my house for a few months while I'm away and am currently on a mission to make as many things as user friendly as possible. One of the things I've always wanted to change but never found the time to look into is the annunciations for built in menus. For example the HVAC menu when adjusting temperature will say "Change temperature has been actioned" which is a bit robotic. This doesn't usually bother me as I have the temperature profiles set for my tastes so very rarely make adjustments. My relatives will likely want to tweak the profiles using the panels however. A more natural language acknowledgement along the lines of "Temperature altered" would be better. Are these annunciations customisable? I haven't found a way to do so yet. Being able to add a little humour like Siri often does would definitely make acceptance easier for those not used to automation.

Automate Database Backup and Shutdown Script

Happy New Year all!

Does anyone know if it is possible to automate the task of periodically taking a backup copy of the database? I thought I might be able to use an event to does this but it doesn't appear this is supported. I run Cloudberry backup on my clients but as the database file for*Cortex is locked open or at least you don't want to try and access this file at the same time as Cortex I wanted to take a backup to a separate folder and have the backup software then backup the database copy.

In a similar way I would like to be able to gracefully shutdown the Idratek network so that my machine can be periodically rebooted, for example during monthly patching. Windows has the capability of running shutdown scripts prior to going down. Again is it possible to interact with Cortex such that on a script could call the network to stop, if necessary the database backed up and Cortex exited before shutting down?

Many thanks

Paul

Major issue last night with Evohome controller

Last night on January 1st I had a major issue with the controller that I've never experienced before and do not want to see again.

All my 12 zones are set to 5 degrees at 22:00 and then I get the usual dribs and drabs of gas usage for a few minutes before everything settles down.

I walked past the controller last night at 22:55 and noticed that my last pre-22:00 programme of heating was still active and running. Panicking, I used the Quick Action 'Off' by turning it on and off. All zones were then set to 5 degrees as they should be. Wondering why on earth this happened, I noticed that the clock was showing 22:34 when the real time was nearing 23:00. I went into setup, turned the auto-update off and reset the clock to 23:06.

Much to my surprise the clock did not change from that time for the next ten minutes and seemed to be frozen. I again changed the the time to 23:15 and restored Auto-Update to 'on'. Again frozen. I was still connected to my wi-fi.

I really wanted to go to bed and didn't want to risk that the controller stayed frozen over night so after a swearing session I rebooted the controller and ascertained that the clock was incrementing as it should be - it was.

I didn't wait around until I saw all the actuators reconnect but all was good this morning. I don't mind niggling things occurring that can be be put down to missed communications but this could cause chaos if it occurred while I was away.

I've never had such a serious issue in three years of using Evohome on any of the three hardware versions I've had.

I'm at a loss as I thought I knew about all of Evohome's foibles but maybe it's a one off, unless it was to do with 1/1/2017!

I see that I'm not alone with a stopped clock - one or two others have been subjected to it.

DTS92E low battery alert not clearing

Must be my day for new Evohome issues!

I've just had a low battery alert on one of my DTS92E thermostats which was confirmed on the unit itself.

I replaced the batteries and the unit re-synced itself back with the controller successfully, however the low battery alarm in still showing in the zone display after several hours.

Is there any experience of such an issue as I would have thought the alarm would clear itself very quickly?

Backstop plan is to leave it overnight and then re-pair but this seems to be an overkill!

Chris

Latest: re-pairing did not clear the low battery icon from the zone! Do I have to delete the zone - really?

What happens non trv radiators with evohome?

Hi, I have recently installed evohome, fantastic I must say and so easy to move from a cm927 controller. Two quick questions though. I have a trv in the hall where I also have the thermostat plugged in. I have 3 non hr92 trv radiators, are these controlled by the thermostat, hence the hall? The reason I ask is that the bathroom radiator, a large metal style radiator for towels (non trv) always seems hot regardless of hall temperature. would it be wise to install trv on this and if so how as it has 2 manual trv at the minute.
Other question is that my hot water has continued to work as normal during the transition. Is this because it's a combi boiler, I was trying to get thermostat to display water temp but can't find any option for it?
Any support or advice would be greatly appreciated

Evohome specialist near Wendover

I’m having problems with my Evohome controlled CH.

Basically I have a hybrid system that was installed by my builders plumber when we had the house extended and a new boiler installed.

I really just wanted a smarter way to control my room stats but now realise that the Evohome is more complicated than that. My wife works from home so we want the heating on all day, but only the downstairs heated during the day.

I have the Evohome controlling the CH with programmable radiator valves, a separate conventional Honeywell programmer controlling the HW, and a John Guest UFH system for 2 rooms all off the same Worcester Bosch boiler.

The HW and UFH are working OK but the rads are not heating up despite the Evohome controller showing measured temp as lower than demanded temp.

This seems to have got progressively worse in the 4 years since the system was installed. It may be something a simple as the CH valve, or may be the Evohome system itself. I’ve got a local heating engineer coming around to check the system, but he won’t touch the Evohome.

So I’m considering disconnecting the Evohome from the CH completely and just running the boiler from the conventional programmer, and try using it just as a valve programmer. The alternative would be to buy a newer Evohome that now supports more zones and move the complete system over to the Evohome. However, given my experience to date I’m loath to do this without specialist help.

I’m getting pretty frustrated by the whole thing.

Cameras for motion detection inputs to presence sensing

we're now running nine cameras in our set-up - would be more, but hardware problems temporarily keeping two more out ...

meaning we've tried including motion detection in presence sensing ...

mixed results so far, partly because lights going off can be seen as motion !

so, wondered, anyone else trying this - any successes ?

My personal experiance in setting up boiler for most efficient fuel consuption

We recently moved into a large fairly old 4 bedroom detached house in the Scottish Highlands, the house has a new Worcester bosch boiler and a separate programmer plus room thermostat and all radiators have tvr valves.

In the first year of living here i knew nothing about the best/most cost effective way to set up all these controls.
After some very expensive gas bills i decided to do lots of research but i wont bore you with the details, basically i came up with the following settings that have slashed our fuel cost in half!

We set all the radiator thermostat valves to max/5 the room thermostat is set to 18degrees and the boiler water temp control is set to 2, it goes from *123456 and max.
The programmer is set to turn the boiler on at 5am as we get up at around 6am it then stays on all day until 10pm we go to bed at 10.30pm

In this configuration the entire house is gently warmed to our comfort setting of about 17degrees, the room thermostat doesn't ever actually click of the burner as the temp never reaches the 18degrees its set it, this is because of the silly low boiler water temp setting of 2, by doing it this way the return temp is very low and the boiler is condensing alot of the time.

How do you know if your boilers working in condensing mode? well i have found out that, with our room thermostat it is a digital one that shows the room temp aswell as the set temp and most importantly it has a symbol that shows when its firing the burner.
as certain times you can look at the room stat see that it should be firing the burner but if you go look at the boiler the burner light is not on but the boiler is making a quite noise.
Also with the lower boiler setting of 2 there is now alot less steam coming out the flu compared to when it used to be set on 5 or 6.

In this setup our lpg gas bill is half what it used to be!!

Now i know this might not be of any help of interest to some as most people prefer to have there house at around 19 to 21 degrees.
But if your like us and are happy with 17 this setup will save you a ton of money! 17degrees is still a lot warmer than outside lol
Peace Matt.

Boiler Efficiencies

My 16 year old Ideal Classic boiler had its annual service and MOT yesterday. The engineer left a copy of the flue gas analysis taped to the boiler front which showed a Net Efficiency of 91.1% which I think equates to a Gross Efficiency of 82.8%. Looking back to the original boiler specs, it is listed as having a Gross Efficiency of 76.1%.

I naively thought that a boiler's efficiency would reduce with age. I appreciate that the flue gas analysis was carried out after the burner etc had been cleaned and the boiler checked, but to me the efficiency value looks odd. I have used the same engineer for the past 10 years so I have no reason to believe that his test kit is out of calibration.

Am I missing something or do boilers become more efficient with age?

Which OpenTherm boilers work well with Evohome?

There's lots of info spread across many threads here, but I thought it might be worth having a reference thread, with all of the info needed in one place.

So, for those using Evohome with Opentherm I wonder whether you'd be kind enough to comment with:

- Boiler make and model
- Boiler type (combi / system / open vent)
- Whether any additional boiler hardware was needed to enable OpenTherm
- How well it works, any niggles, etc.
- If you upgraded to this from an initial BDR91 install, have you noticed much difference to comfort or costs?

Low level wash lighting for Bathroom

Has anybody installed low level wash lighting in a bathroom? I'm interested in what products you used. I'm fed up with being rudely awaken due to brightness if I need to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. So I saw some eyelid LEDs in a posh bathroom shop but they were £200 for the lights and £90 for the PIR because "it was special" and that's about all I could get from them.

I've been trawling the internet most of morning for something neat and this is as good as I've got so far...

Sensio Nimbus 6 Pack - £33
Sensio PIR Sensor - £28

These together seem to make up a solution but, the one's I saw had an eyelid which means all the light went down to the floor. I found one that looked the part - (ILS EYELID1W) but the LEDs were £94 each! Also another on mr-resistor that I like and at a more 'reasonable' £39 each. Both had to have driver and PIR extra.

If anyone has come up with a good solution with nice looking lights I'd really appreciate some idea of what you ended up with.

Tado V3 vs Evohome ?

A colleague at work has been thinking about some sort of smart heating controls since I got my Evohome in 2015 and had been seriously considering Evohome but was wavering and seems to have been swayed by the new Tado V3, largely I think on the basis that it's "easier" to self install than Evohome from a wiring perspective. (Not sure that that's true, but...)

The last time I looked at Tado (v2 I think) it wasn't a multi-zoned system so wasn't really a competitor to Evohome, but V3 adds radiator valve controllers and thus proper zoning. The question is, how does it stack up against Evohome in practice ?

I can't find any proper reviews of the version 3 release of Tado as it was only announced in September 2016 and I'm not sure the radiator valves are even shipping yet anyway. It's also not entirely clear what the architecture of the system is and whether any cloud based control is used for scheduling or whether the new main wall thermostat with the number on the front acts as a central controller for scheduling in the way that the evotouch controller does.

Does anyone have any first hand experience of Tado V3 or at least pointers to proper reviews or technical information on the architecture ?

I don't have any intention to switch (I'm too invested in Evohome now anyway) but given that the price is nearly identical to Evohome, the feature set looks very similar, and it seems to have swayed someone who was considering Evohome I'm curious about how good it actually is.

One drawback I can see is that there isn't a controller UI as such, relying on smart phone apps (and web interface ?) to configure and schedule. Although I like a smartphone app as an additional/remote method of controlling the system, I'm not sure that I would want to be completely without the controller UI and relying entirely on a smartphone app. (or web browser)
